Is It Rude to Talk in the Sauna? Sauna Etiquette by Country

Warm wooden sauna interior with soft lighting

Short answer: No, talking in the sauna is not rude in itself. Loud talking is. A few quiet words are fine almost everywhere, but read the room: if everyone is silent, stay silent too. During an Aufguss (the towel-waving heat ritual) and in rooms marked as quiet saunas, you should not talk at all.

Most people who ask this question have had the same moment: you sit down on the bench, somebody starts a conversation, and you are not sure whether to answer or give a polite nod and close your eyes. The good news is that there is no single worldwide rule. The better news is that a few simple habits keep you on the right side of sauna etiquette wherever you are.

It depends on where you are

Sauna culture is very different from country to country. What feels normal in a Finnish lakeside sauna can feel out of place in a German spa, and a chatty American gym sauna follows its own rules again.

WhereIs talking okay?What to expect
FinlandYes, quietlyCalm, low-voice conversation is part of sauna life, especially with friends and family. An old Finnish saying compares behaving in the sauna to behaving in church: no shouting, no arguing.
Germany, Austria, SwitzerlandKeep it minimalSpa saunas are often quiet spaces. Whispering is tolerated, normal conversation can get you looks, and during an Aufguss silence is expected. Some facilities have signed quiet saunas.
USA, Canada, UK gymsUsually fineGym saunas are more social. Short chats with regulars are common, but loud phone calls and group conversations still annoy people.
Russian banya, Korean jjimjilbangYesThese are traditionally social places where groups come together, so conversation is part of the experience.

7 simple rules for talking in the sauna

  • Match the room. If people are talking softly, you can join. If everyone is silent, stay silent.
  • Keep your voice low. Heat and wood walls carry sound. A normal speaking voice feels loud in a small cabin.
  • Keep it short. A greeting, a quick question or a friendly comment is fine. Long stories can wait for the cool-down area.
  • Never talk during an Aufguss. The sauna master is working, and many guests use the ritual to switch off. Save your questions for afterwards.
  • Skip heavy topics. Work stress, politics and arguments do not belong in a space people use to relax.
  • No phone calls. Phones are a bad idea in the heat anyway, and a call breaks the calm for everyone. See Can you bring an iPhone in the sauna?.
  • Respect a short answer. If someone replies with one word or closes their eyes, they want quiet. That is not rude, it is sauna etiquette.
Try a silent session

When you should stay completely silent

  • During an Aufguss or any guided heat ritual (see our Aufguss etiquette guide)
  • In saunas signed as quiet or relaxation saunas (in German spas often called “Ruhesauna”)
  • In relaxation rooms between rounds
  • When most people in the cabin have their eyes closed
  • Late in the evening in hotel spas, when guests come to wind down

How to start a conversation without being awkward

If you want to chat, start small and give the other person an easy way out. A comment about the heat (“Pretty hot today, right?”) or the sauna itself works well. If you get a friendly answer, you can continue quietly. If you get a nod, let it go. Friends who come together should keep in mind that a shared joke can still be loud for everyone else on the bench.

What if someone else is too loud?

Most people simply do not know the local habits. A friendly, quiet “Sorry, would you mind keeping it down a bit?” usually works. In a spa or gym you can also tell the staff, especially if people ignore a posted quiet rule. Avoid starting an argument in the cabin, because that breaks the calm even more than the talking did.

Enjoying the silence

Many regulars say the best sauna sessions are the quiet ones. Silence gives you time to breathe slowly, notice the heat and actually switch off. If you find silence boring at first, try our guided sauna rituals or the ideas in How to not get bored in a sauna.
