Red Light Therapy in the Sauna: Benefits, Limits, and How to Set Up a Panel

Short answer

A red light panel in the sauna is a skin-and-ritual upgrade, not a recovery machine. The best evidence is for skin texture with repeated close-range sessions; a 2025 review found no benefit of whole-body red light for exercise recovery or performance. The practical catch: sauna-rated panels such as the SaunaMAX Pro are built for up to 150 F (65 C), and a traditional sauna runs hotter than that. Mount low, use it early in the session, or pair it with an infrared sauna.

This guide replaces an earlier version of this page that promised mood boosts, serotonin and heat-enhanced light penetration without a single source. We have removed those claims. What follows is what the manufacturer specifies, what an independent measurement found, and what the published research actually supports.

What red light therapy is, and what it is not

Red light therapy, or photobiomodulation, exposes skin and the tissue just beneath it to red light (roughly 600 to 700 nm) and near-infrared light (roughly 800 to 900 nm) from LEDs or lasers. The dose is measured in light energy reaching the skin, not in warmth. A panel held at the right distance for ten minutes delivers a defined dose; standing further away or cutting the time changes that dose.

That is the first thing to separate from an infrared sauna. An infrared sauna heater emits far-infrared energy to warm your body; you feel it as heat, and the point is the heat. A red light panel emits visible red and invisible near-infrared light at wavelengths chosen for their interaction with cells; you feel almost nothing, and the point is the light. Both use the word infrared, and they do different jobs.

What the research supports, and what it does not

Skin: reasonable support. A controlled trial with 136 volunteers treated twice a week for 30 sessions with red and near-infrared light reported improved skin complexion and feeling, reduced roughness, and higher collagen density measured by ultrasound, compared with untreated controls. [1] Note the setup: close range, the same body area every time, and months of consistency. A panel used occasionally from across a sauna bench is not that protocol.

Muscle recovery and performance: not supported for whole-body use. A 2025 systematic review of whole-body photobiomodulation found five eligible studies with 105 active participants. None reported a benefit for fatigue biomarkers or exercise performance. Two reported better sleep quality. The authors conclude that whole-body red light may help sleep but shows no evidence of benefit for recovery or performance, and that the gap with localized treatment studies still needs explaining. [2] A panel in a sauna is a whole-body setup, so this is the relevant evidence.

Mood, serotonin, heat-enhanced penetration: no source. The previous version of this page stated these as facts. We could not find a study behind any of them and have removed them. Bright light does affect how people feel, but that is not the same as a measured hormonal effect, and we will not present it as one.

The heat problem nobody mentions

The SaunaMAX Pro is rated for a maximum operating temperature of 150 F (65 C). [3] A traditional Finnish-style sauna is usually run at 160 to 195 F (70 to 90 C) at bench level. An independent reviewer made the same point: many saunas reach or exceed the limit, and running the panel above it risks the device and the warranty. [4]

This does not make the panel useless in a hot room; it changes where and when you use it. Sauna air stratifies strongly: the ceiling can be 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the floor. A panel mounted low on the wall, below the upper bench, sits in much cooler air than the thermometer near the ceiling suggests. Put a second thermometer at panel height and trust that reading, not the one over the door. Use the panel during the warm-up and the first round, before the room peaks, and switch it off when your low thermometer approaches the limit. If you run your sauna at the hot end and will not mount low, pair the panel with an infrared cabin instead, which typically sits at 110 to 140 F and never gets near the rating.

For the same reason, keep water away from the panel. IP65 covers steam and splashes, not a ladle aimed in its direction.

How to set up a panel in a sauna

  • Distance. An independent measurement of the SaunaMAX Pro found about 52 mW per square centimeter at six inches at the peak point and 41 on average across the panel. [4] That is deliberately moderate for 20 to 30 minute sessions. Sit 6 to 12 inches from the panel for the area you want to treat; from across the room you get light, not a dose.
  • Time. The device caps a session at 30 minutes and must be restarted after that. [4] Ten to twenty minutes per area is a sensible starting point; the skin study above used repeated sessions over months, not one long one.
  • Eyes. Wear the included goggles. Near-infrared is invisible, so brightness is no guide to how much is reaching your eyes.
  • Mounting. The panel ships with a hanging bracket and a door hook; a mobile stand is optional. [3] Leaning it in a corner is the simplest setup but the cable has to run through the door, which is the most common complaint. [4]
  • Order of operations. Panel on during warm-up and round one, panel off before the room peaks, then the usual heat, cool-down and rest rhythm. If you use our session timer, add the panel time to the heat-up wait.

The SaunaMAX Pro: the facts

The SaunaMAX Pro from PlatinumLED is the panel this page has covered since 2024, and it remains the best-known sauna-rated option. The manufacturer specifies 320 LEDs, 201 W power draw, a 39 by 10 by 3.5 inch body weighing 17 pounds, IP65 sealing, a 150 F (65 C) operating limit, an integrated timer with remote, eye protection in the box, a rated lifespan of 100,000 hours and a three-year warranty. [3] The independent review measured six wavelengths: 477 nm blue, 635 and 660 nm red, and 810, 830 and 850 nm near-infrared. [4]

Downsides from the same review: the temperature limit, a 30-minute session cap, no way to link several panels, and a smaller treated area once it is inside a cabin. [4] None of these are deal-breakers for the use described above; all of them matter if you expected a full-body clinic panel.

Who should skip it

If your main goal is athletic recovery, the current evidence for whole-body red light does not justify the spend; put the money into the sauna itself or into sleep. If you run a traditional sauna hot and will not mount the panel low, you will spend most sessions with it switched off. And if you simply want red light for your skin, a standard panel used in a normal room before or after the sauna avoids the heat constraint entirely and lets you keep the close, consistent distance that the skin research used.
