How to calculate your sauna’s running cost
Electricity used (kWh) = heater power (kW) × [warm-up hours + (later heating hours × average power fraction)]. Then multiply kWh by your electricity price in dollars per kWh. The calculator converts minutes to hours and cents to dollars for you.
In the 6 kW example: 6 × [30/60 + (30/60 × 0.50)] = 4.5 kWh. Multiplying 4.5 by $0.1834 gives $0.8253 per session. At three sessions per week, there are 156 modeled sessions in a 52-week year: $128.75 per year, or $10.73 when divided by 12. Calculations keep full precision until the displayed result is rounded.
kW and kWh are different. A 6 kW heater is a device’s power rating. Running at full power for one hour consumes 6 kWh of energy. A heater does not necessarily draw its full rated power for every minute it is switched on: thermostat cycling changes the average after warm-up.

These scenarios all use 18.34 cents/kWh and three sessions a week. They illustrate the calculation; they are not product test results or typical bills for every sauna.

Which number should you take from your electricity bill?
Use the variable price you pay for an additional kWh at the time you run the sauna. If your bill separates supply and usage-based delivery, account for both. Fixed monthly charges that you pay whether or not you use the sauna are excluded from this incremental-cost calculation.
For time-of-use plans, select “Custom rate from my bill” and enter the relevant period’s price. If a session spans two price periods, calculate the two portions separately. Demand charges, tiered pricing, solar self-consumption, export credits and taxes can require a more detailed calculation. A state average is a starting point when you do not yet have a bill.
What changes the amount of electricity a sauna uses?
- Warm-up and total heating time: include preheating, breaks between rounds and manufacturer-required drying time.
- Room and heater: use the actual rated input of your infrared cabin or electric heater. A higher kW rating alone does not determine the total bill.
- Heat loss: room construction, glazing, insulation, outside conditions, door opening and required ventilation can change warm-up time and thermostat cycling.
- Usage frequency: two people using one warmed room together do not require two separate warm-up cycles.
- Other equipment: add separately powered lights, fans or accessories if you need a whole-system estimate.
A suitably rated energy meter can replace assumptions with measurements. Hardwired heaters require equipment appropriate for the circuit; ask an electrician about monitoring rather than connecting a high-power heater to an ordinary plug-in meter.
Infrared versus traditional sauna electricity costs
Compare the nameplate power and heating time of the specific models you are considering. A lower-power cabin can cost less per session, but room size, warm-up time, temperature settings and how long you run it all matter. Do not compare only the purchase price or assume that all infrared units consume the same amount.

Electricity is only one part of ownership cost
This calculator excludes purchase, delivery, installation, electrical work, repairs, cleaning supplies and replacement components. It also does not estimate wood, natural gas or propane consumption. Request separate quotes for those costs and compare local fuel prices with the specified appliance’s consumption.
To reduce avoidable electricity use, time the warm-up to when you will use the sauna, avoid leaving the door open unnecessarily and follow the manufacturer’s insulation, ventilation and drying instructions. Do not block ventilation or shorten a required drying cycle to chase a smaller estimate.

How much does it cost to run a 6 kW sauna for one hour?
At continuous full power, it uses 6 kWh. At 20 cents/kWh that costs $1.20. At the June 2026 U.S. residential average of 18.34 cents/kWh, it costs approximately $1.10. If the thermostat cycles, actual energy use may be lower; include warm-up when comparing sessions.
Why does the calculator use more than four weeks per month?
It models 52 weeks per year and divides the annual cost by 12. Treating every month as four weeks would count only 48 weeks in a year.
Are state rates updated automatically?
No. This tool uses the clearly dated June 2026 EIA dataset. You can always override it with your current utility rate. State averages cannot predict the exact tariff at your address.
