Traditional sauna: 70–90 °C
This is the range an electric or wood-fired sauna is built for. Below 70 °C most people find a dry sauna underwhelming; above 90 °C it becomes a short, intense experience that regular Finnish bathers enjoy and beginners usually do not. Home units with a thermostat are typically set between 75 and 85 °C. An infrared cabin does not try to heat the air; its panels heat your skin directly. That is why the thermometer reads what would be a lukewarm traditional sauna, yet you still sweat heavily after 15–20 minutes. Most cabins max out around 60–65 °C by design. Turning the dial to the maximum does not make the session “better”; it mostly makes the air stuffy. Steam room: 40–50 °C
Steam rooms run cool by sauna standards because saturated air transfers heat to the skin far more efficiently than dry air. At 100 % humidity, 45 °C feels intensely hot and 55 °C would be unsafe. Why the thermometer is only half the story
Humidity
Two saunas at the same reading can feel completely different. Water vapour carries heat into the skin and slows the evaporation of sweat, so every step up in humidity feels like a step up in temperature. This is the whole logic of the Finnish löyly: keep the air at 80 °C and use short bursts of steam to make it feel like 95 °C for a minute at a time. Bench height
Hot air rises. In a typical sauna the air at the upper bench is 15–25 °C hotter than at the lower bench, and the temperature at your feet can be 30 °C lower than at your head. Your own tolerance
Heat tolerance is partly trained. People who sauna weekly comfortably sit at temperatures that would send a first-timer out in three minutes. It also varies from day to day with hydration, sleep, alcohol and how hard you trained. The right temperature is the one at which you can breathe easily, sit still and enjoy the heat for the length of the round. Discomfort, a racing pulse or dizziness are the signal to move down or get out, whatever the thermometer says.
Finding your temperature as a beginner
You do not need a training plan, just a conservative starting point and small steps.
- Start: lower bench, 65–75 °C in a traditional sauna (45–50 °C infrared), one round of 8–10 minutes. Sit, breathe, get out before you feel you must.
- Then: once a session at that setting feels easy, add either about 5 °C or a few minutes, not both at once. Try the upper bench before you raise the thermostat.
- Rounds: two or three short rounds with cool-downs in between are more pleasant and easier to tolerate than one long one.
- Stop when: you feel dizzy, nauseous, your heart is pounding or you stop sweating. Those are reasons to leave, not to push through.

Is there a “best” temperature for health benefits?
Not one that research has identified. The long-term studies behind most sauna health headlines come from eastern Finland, where 2,315 men were followed for about 20 years. The men who used a sauna 4–7 times a week had markedly lower rates of fatal cardiovascular disease than those who went once a week (Laukkanen et al., 2015). Their saunas were ordinary Finnish saunas at roughly 80–100 °C, and the study did not test different temperatures against each other; the variable that mattered was how often and how long people went. Reviews of the clinical literature (Hussain & Cohen 2018; Laukkanen et al. 2018) reach a similar conclusion: regular sessions at normal sauna temperatures are associated with benefits, side effects are rare and mostly mild, and there is no evidence that hotter is better.
Two cautions follow. First, those studies are observational; they show association, not that the sauna caused the outcome. Second, the same reviews note that people with unstable heart disease, recent heart attack, severe aortic stenosis, or who are pregnant should talk to a doctor before regular sauna use, and that alcohol and sauna heat together are a well-documented danger. When is a sauna too hot?
Most electric sauna heaters have a built-in high-limit cut-off; manufacturers commonly set it somewhere around 100–110 °C air temperature, but the exact limit depends on the heater and controller model, so check your unit’s manual. For a home sauna, “too hot” is best defined by how you feel rather than by a number: if you cannot breathe comfortably through your nose, if the wooden bench is too hot to sit on without a towel, or if you are counting the seconds, turn it down. Nose and ear pain, a burning sensation on the skin and a pounding pulse are warnings. Children, older adults and anyone new to saunas should stay in the lower half of the range and shorter rounds. Measuring temperature correctly
Mount the thermometer on the wall above the top bench, roughly 15 cm (6 inches) below the ceiling and away from the heater; that is where the manufacturers calibrate their charts. A combined thermometer–hygrometer is worth having in a traditional sauna because it tells you how much of what you feel is humidity. A cheap thermometer near the door or at bench height will read 10–20 °C lower than the “official” temperature, which is fine as long as you know it. Why your heater sets the ceiling
If your sauna never reaches the temperature you want, the thermostat is rarely the problem. As a planning rule of thumb, manufacturers size electric heaters at roughly 1 kW per cubic metre of room volume and add capacity for glass walls, uninsulated surfaces or stone and tile; the sizing chart for your specific heater is what counts. Sauna temperature around the world
Expect different norms depending on where you bathe. Finnish public saunas commonly run 80–100 °C with frequent löyly. German and Austrian spas run similar temperatures and add scheduled Aufguss sessions, where an attendant pours scented water on the stones and fans the steam through the room; these are the hottest few minutes most visitors will ever experience. Many US gym and hotel saunas are limited to 65–80 °C for liability and maintenance reasons, and some prohibit water on the stones altogether, which is why they can feel oddly mild to anyone used to European saunas.
